I feel the compulsion to say something
yet have no idea what it is. (This is not an uncommon frame of mind, for me, at least, usually the next step is to write some piece of short fanfic to post here.)
But, I don't have time, today. So, I'll just remark that the SG-1 episode "100 Days", upon closer inspection, is a fascinating premise that really deserved a two- or three-parter to execute well.
In addition, upon that same inspection, it's intriguing to note that the one apparently non-thiestic society (ancestor-worship, or ancestor-acknowledgement, at least) they meet is the one Jack gets stranded in. Rather PC...but, also a bit of a cop-out. (Later: I admit, Jonas' planet doesn't come off as terribly religious either, so maybe I'm talking through my hat.)
If I were to write anything based on this episode, it would be a riff on the concept called "1000 days", or even "300", to provide more time for Jack's grieving process, since I think 100 days is too short to begin with, and to let us see the impact of the time spent trying to execute a rescue on the Earth-side team.
Or, I'd write something short based on the conversation between Janet and Sam in the episode, and how no one gets it, that there can be love that isn't friendship per se, or sexual, but something other that we don't have a good word for in English, but has something to do with loyalty and trust and a bond we, or we-Americans, perhaps, seem to be unable to admit. That's love, too. Or at least, belonging.
Of course she misses him. How can you not miss a part of your own (emotional) body? We get to see the team re-forging its identity after the loss of Daniel in Meridian, I would have liked to see the same treatment here. But then the impact of this episode would have been far greater, part of the larger arc of the season. It's just a single-episode adventure instead. *sigh*
Although, if one tied together 100 Days and then Shades of Gray, the next episode, as a partial response to those events...you could really disrupt that team identity. Hmmmmmm. I wasn't going to watch SoG, but maybe I will.
