foo, meet bar
Dec. 31st, 2003 10:59 amI woke up this morning to the sound of my clock radio not going off. Why, you ask? Because the power was out *again*. It came on around 7 am, and there were various official power-company vehicles hanging around my apartment complex. And it's not like I was going in to work today.
Everything seems to be lit and live at the moment.
On top of that, one's venerated parent called to say she and pater are *both* sick and won't be coming down to visit today after all. And I *just* got done grocery shopping, picking up fixings for quiche and stirfry and some treats, including treatstuff that I can't have. So, ptui, and I need to unload some cheese before I cave and eat it.
I'm kind of glad, though, because what if the power goes out again? It was out for over 12 hours last time. It's not like my folks just live up the street, it's a bit of a haul. And everything here is electric, so I wouldn't be able to cook except in the little hibachi I keep around for 'barbecuing someday'.
Ach, well, if it did happen, we'd be fine. We are a people who know how to 'make do'.
Come to think of it, more power outages and stuff like that should happen to your average neighborhood. Builds character. You can tell I got loads already, only smug bastids such as This Author would suggest stuff like this. But damn it, Heinlein was right, just once, everyone should have to fend fully for themselves, to learn they can do it, and that food doesn't grow in supermarkets and ATM cards are not universal currency.
Enough of my bitching. I'll post a cute vignette in a few minutes to make up for it.
