This was another TV-intensive day. First, Al Gore's speech on CSPAN. Then, um...something. Or maybe I logged on. Then, 'The Specialist' (Sly Stallone, Sharon Stone, who, actually, make a pretty nice angsty couple, surrounded by explosions), then some ditzing around -- can you tell I'm looking for Things To Knit To? -- and one of my fave Stargate SG-1 episodes ("Abyss"), then 'Kate and Leopold', which I really enjoyed. It's a time travel story where Leopold comes forward from the past into modern New York, but it never devolves into slapstick. Very few people ever find that he's a time traveller, and then of course there's the happy ending.

It was a genuine romance, as opposed to a romantic comedy. I think.

I honestly kept expecting someone to burst in and arrest Leo for not having the stack of I.D.'s and cards we humans tend to carry around these days, or try to commit him to the funny farm for talkin' crazy. Didn't happen. Kinda happened to one of the other characters, but not...well, not slapstick-y.

Neat. I wouldn't mind watching it again. Or even owning it, perhaps.

However, that's enough of the niceness. Now for the rant.

I'll keep it brief, we've all heard it before: Meg! Gain some weight! Remember when you used to be pretty? I do.

God. I want to become a filmmaker just to cast all these women and tell them "I need you to gain 20 lbs for this role. Can you do that for me?" Although some probably need more. Much more. It's just, jesus, I can SEE your HUMERUS. Go eat something. Please.

Yes, they must gain weight. I've always found it a bit on the creepy side when you can count their ribs, you know? So not attractive.

It's awful

For me there's just something about stick-figure arms. *shudder* Someone needs to ship these women to Germany for a couple months, for some stick-to-your-ribs food.

Now I'm hungry.

hello, and a thought

hey now, i am friends with shellmidwife and was over her direction and read something you were asking her, and ended up here. i'm kinda a newbie so i feel odd replying.. must go from simple nettiquette 101 to advanced blog etiquette.
anyway, this immediately struck me, because:
once i saw the movie "circle of friends" (very nice btw), and was very taken with the beautiful actress centered in it, minnie driver. had never heard of her before. *then* i found out she had gained 25 pounds for the part, and saw her photo after her return to model-thinness. well, that was a shock for me, tho i imagine most would differ out there on the street. or not? i hear a movie is out now called "real women have curves"... of course this is an independent film :^)
