What I did for Christmas

Bought eggs for a woman whose WIC checklist didn't include them. ("No eggs," said the cashier, looking at some piece of paper the woman handed him to pay, however all that works. "Peanut butter, [something, something, something]. No eggs." "Hold it." I said, thinking of a blog entry by someone I can't remember, talking about how hard it was to feed her kids on WIC, and how she'd go through the checkout line twice, once for the kids, and then once on whatever change was left over, for herself. Left over change, I thought, and opened my mouth: "I will pay for those eggs.")

If I had had more money myself, I'd have bought her the whole goddamn store.

What kills me is the people that believe this is what that woman *chose*. That she *prefers* to be on food stamps or WIC or whatever.

Well, that's what I thought. But I've never paid attention to the inner workings of all this. She had a card-thingy and a piece of paper, and I had they impression they were two separate devices (but I wasn't paying a lot of attention, I was just standing in line, you know?); I wonder if the piece of paper maybe had more restrictions than other things she gets over the course of a month.

But *eggs*? I mean, one of nature's most perfect foods?

Thanks. It makes me livid. Anyone who thinks people choose to poor, or gay, or whatever the oppressed minority du jour is has their head so far up their ass they'd have to get kicked in the kidneys to get a black eye.
