Once upon a time, Daniel Jackson solved a mystery. It brought him a wife, and Jack O'Neill.

Once, after Daniel laid his gun down during practice, Jack pulled off his ear protectors and wiped grit out of his eye. Then cleared his throat noisely, before touching the button that pulled the target toward them, so he could take out a sharpie and criticize Daniel's shooting.
After they'd gone through another 50 rounds, Jack said, "all done, Daniel". Very softly. But his voice didn't sound like his voice. It sounded like his old voice. His voice before the gate ever opened. Before Abydos, before everything.
His voice sounded like he'd spent years silent. Atoning.
Daniel put his hand on Jack's arm as he tried to leave. "I'm not Charlie."
Jack didn't meet his eyes. "I know."
Daniel let him go.

Once upon a time, they'd stepped out into desert, and Jack watched Daniel wrap cloth around his head to protect himself from the sun.
A simple thing, done with hands practiced. Hands that still knew the ways of Abydos. Jack watched the shadow of this task performed, saw it suddenly falter, then continue.
He waited before looking up to Daniel's face, watching shadows instead, on foreign sand.
A word floated on the wind. It might have been the name of someone's wife. Or perhaps, nothing.
