After the gun exercise (Hornblower drabble)

by: Apple Cameron, Sept 10 2003
regarding: Hornblower ("Mutiny")
starring: the four leftenants of HMS Renown

After the gun exercise:

The three leftenants gathered at the rail, grinning as one.

For just a moment, stress and strain were forgotten.

Buckland was happy because the crew was starting to come together.

Bush was happy to be doing the work God put him on earth to do, amongst men who felt the same.

Kennedy was happy because his spirit was always with others: if they were happy, he was happy.

The focus of their attention, one Horatio Hornblower, danced naked in the water and laughed.

1) This is lovely.

2) Check out [livejournal.com profile] hh100, the "Hornblower" drabble community. It requests drabbles based on weekly challenges; I've put three up so far, and there are a lot of really good ones floating around.

3) LEF-tenant? Do they do that in the books?

Leftenant? No, it mostly seems the other spelling. I had a moment of poetic licence.

Okay -- AFAIK, they spell it "lieutenant" and pronounce it "left." You'll find some Brits saying, "loo" today, but that's mostly an American influence.

Oh -- and the drabbles are usually in response to the weekly challenge ... I don't think this one fits the current challenge, but you can keep it in waiting for when it does.

Yeah, that's my AFAIK, too. Me and ee cummings, bending language to our will. ;-)

And...I posted it to hh100 already, just because it doesn't meet a challenge doesn't mean it's not a drabble!

Sometimes I like challenges, sometimes I don't. Hard to tell in advance, actually.
