Delores de la Vega, daughter of a well-respected matriach, returns from Spain where she's been at finishing school.

[With a whim of steel, her idea of finishing school, thanks to mum's iron will as well as her own famous obstinacy, includes practice at the sword, under the tutelage of a great swordsman intrigued by the challenge of a woman ("a woman", he mused, "with their naturally more supple wrists", when the idea was first proposed), and practice at politics as well as languages and art.]

Upon her return and the tragic passing of her mother, she and the capitan (must include twirlable mustachio), plight of the people, yada yada, must take direct action, and...

Zorro is born! After all, in that kind of timeframe and sexist society, being a woman is the perfect secret identity.

I have to admit, the first thing I thought of when the fencing master remarks that women's wrists are more supple was, "Yes, but men's wrists are more practiced." O:-D
